Orange Thimble

Another café has “surfaced” in Tiong Bahru!

JAF was having breakfast at Tiong Bahru market and happened to walk pass this little café. Though we were still VERY FULL from our earlier breakfast, we couldn’t stop ourselves from NOT entering this café. Haha!

It looked like any other café until we explored further in… Check this out!

Don’t you just love the backyard!
The cafe is a very cosy feeling place, and it’s divided into 5 sections, including the backyard. Each corner is a different layout. Cool right? 🙂

After you place your order at the counter, a “beeper” will be given. It will beep when your food is ready for collection.

Beep! Beep! Your food is ready!

Nice cuppa latte to start your day! Remember these fancy gems biscuits we used to eat when we were young?

They serve “All Day Breakfast” on weekends!

Here you gooo…. 2 Sunny Side-up + 2 Sausages, Sauteed Mushroom + Roasted Tomatoes + Bacon +Baked Beans + 2 slices of Toast = $11.50

Orange Thimble will definitely become another hang-out place for us! Next time we are coming here with an empty stomach! J

Caphe East

Vietnamese food has never been one of the top choices when JAF is searching for food. Well, probably because the food has a distinctive “fishy” taste. BUT…this time round, friends have convinced JAF that it’s a MUST try for this newly set up café located at the east! Hmmm…let’s take a look…

Goi Cuon (Summer Rolls) – 2pc: $5.00 and 4pc: $8.00

These rolls are freshly made and filled with prawns, sliced pork, lettuce, cucumber, vermicelli and served with a special peanut sauce.

Verdict: NICE! The rice sheet is extremely thin and delicate and the ingredients used are all fresh! Love the sweetness of the peanut sauce and the texture is just nice, not too thick or watery.

Cha Gio (Spring Rolls) – 3pc: $6.00 and 9pc: $9.00

Traditional Vietnamese dish which is stuffed with Chinese mushrooms, minced pork, crab meat, prawns and vermicelli. Fried to perfection and served with homemade fish sauce.

Verdict: A “never-go-wrong” to order dish when you eat at a Vietnamese restaurant. Very crispy, but it would be even better if it’s less oily. The homemade fish sauce is good, it doesn’t have the fishy taste at all!

Pho Tai – $9.00

Raw beef with flat rice noodles served with homemade broth and garnished with mint, coriander, onions and scallions.

Verdict: JAF LOVE the broth! The broth is light yet very tasty and flavourful! Every sip leaves a hint of sweetness in your mouth and you never seem to get enough of the soup! *Heavenly….*
Unlike other restaurants which use beef slices, Caphe East has its very own style – the beef meat is pounded instead of sliced, hence it looks like minced beef. Flat silky noodles soaked in the broth… WOoOo… just so AWESOME! 🙂

Café Sua Nong – $4.50

Traditional Vietnamese Coffee with condensed milk. * Vietnamese coffee filter brews one single cup of coffee. Looks complicated but it’s actually not…It comes in three parts, the main central brewing pot, a lid (which also doubles as a coaster), and a mini plunger.*

Verdict: “STRONG” is the only word I can describe! It’s like Singaporean style coffee – “Kopi-Gao”. Loads of condensed milk are added so you can just stir according to how sweet you like your coffee to be! 🙂

Bangkok Express @ Newton Circus

Sawasdee ka! Welcome to Newton Circus!

We chanced upon this thai food stall when we were there for the famous Bee Heng Poh Piah. At first we hesitated… until we realised that the cook and server are Thai. Hmm…how bad can the thai food be right?

Phad Thai – $4.50
The 1st dish that came to our mind when we were standing in front of the stall was…PHAD THAI! What is Thai Food without Phad Thai?
Well, JAF and friends were very impressed with the Phad Thai here! Not only is the boss very generous with the ingredients, the texture of the glass noodles is cooked just right, not too wet or sticky. Taste even better when we mixed the noodles with the chopped peanuts and…..dash of lime. J

Tom Yum Soup – $5.00
The 2nd dish would definitely be the Tom Yum Soup! For $5.00 you get a BIG bowl of yummilicious soup! JAF tried a few places and this got to be the only one with such a generous portion of seafood! Not too sure if they serve the clear soup but we were all very satisfied with their creamy red chilli base Tom Yum soup.
*If you can’t take too spicy stuff, you can tell them you prefer “less-spicy” and they will be more than happy to cook for you.

Fried Chicken Cashew Nuts – $6.00
This dish taste pretty similar to our chinese style, “Sweet and Sour Pork”. Chunky chicken meat fried with sweet and sour sauce, onion and last but not least, cashew nuts. Oh Yes! This dish comes with Mango Salad on the side too! The salad is not a huge portion but just nice for one person. (Fyi, this dish comes with rice.)

Green Curry – $4.50
WooOoo… the gravy for the Green Curry is rich, creamy and flavourful. The chicken is very juicy and tender too. It definitely goes very well with a plain bowl of rice.

Chicken Omelette – $4.00
This is a simple dish – Minced chicken meat with egg. Yup, SIMPLE is the word but JAF simply love this dish! The minced meat are evenly spread, the eggs are nicely cooked, not too burnt yet crispy! *loving it*

Thai Fried Tung Hoon – $4.50
Unlike other stalls that we have tried, the tung hoon are not too dry but springy and most importantly you would not get clumps of tung hoon sticking together.

Tom Yum Paste Chicken – $5.50
This is the only dish that JAF would consider as “so-so”. We could not taste the tom yum paste despite it’s name. But one thing for sure, the chicken served here is always big, chunky and very tender. It comes with a small portion of mango salad on the side and rice as well!

Smiths Authentic British Fish & Chips

JAF heard so much from our “Ang Moh” friends and colleagues about this Fish & Chips joint in Singapore. To them, the Fish & Chips here is the closest they can get to an original one back in UK.
When we reached there, we were taken aback by the takeaway counter, because we were expecting an “English – style” restaurant.

So this is how it works at Smiths…
You order at the counter –> wait a while –> pick up –> off to a English Fish & Chips feast!.

Basic condiments for Fish & Chips.
Singaporean style – Chilli/Ketchup/Tartar Sauce
Ang Moh style – Vinegar/Salt/Ketchup/Tartar Sauce

Just like the old days, the Fish & Chips at Smiths are wrapped in paper!
We chose “Mushy Peas” as the side dish. Fyi, their mushy peas are prepared in the authentic British way.
*Definition of Mushy Peas: Dried marrowfat peas which are first soaked overnight in water and then simmered with a little sugar and salt until they form a thick green lumpy soup.*

We LOVE the Fish & Chips! (We ordered the Haddock and Cod)
YES! The secret lies in the batter! JAF found out that Smiths’ home-made batter is made fresh every day to their secret recipe. Their chips are thick cut chips, peeled and chipped every morning. *YUMS!* Many of our ang-moh friends recommended the Haddock, however JAF feels that the Cod tastes better. The flesh is actually more moist and flavourful. Perhaps you might like to try them and let us know?

Mushy Peas
Cod+Chips
Haddock+Chips

Ming Chung Restaurant

Henghua is a minority chinese dialect of the immigrants from Putien in Fujian province. The language is pretty close to Foochow and Hokkien. There is only a handful of authentic Henghua restaurants in Singapore and their commonly used ingredients are seaweed, oysters, clams and other seafood. This is because Putien is located near the coast. *Ah….now we know!*

Ming Chung Restaurant is established in 1933 and is one of Singapore’s oldest Henghua restaurants. The restaurant was named “Ming Chung”, meaning “People” in Chinese, to reflect the affordable home-style Henghua food for the diverse clientele including rickshaw riders and labourers.

You have to arrive as early as 5pm to “chop” for a table especially if you are heading here for dinner on a weekend!

The Heng Hua Lor Mee is a MUST order when you come here!
Expecting the typical “dark” version Lor Mee? The Lor Mee here is white in gravy instead but the spoon base is similar to the “dark” version, in starchy broth. It has loads of ingredients like seafood, sliced pork, clams, tau pok and vegetables.

Another signature dish is this stir fried LaLa (clams), very fresh with natural sweetness! And we LOVE the flavourful sauce too!

WOooo….We love this prawn fritters!! Love the batter which is light and not oily and it’s SUPER CRISPY!!!

The batang fish served here is very fresh! This is a very simple dish yet they cook it so well. The fish is evenly fried and when you dip it with the light soy sauce + cut chilli… YUMS!

Last but not least, the fried rice! The rice is fried just right with the “Wok Hei” fragrance! They are very generous with their ingredients – Eggs + Prawns + CharSiew + Chinese Sausages.

TCS ~ The Coastal Settlement

Whether it’s vintage clothing, or retro home deco and restaurants, they seem to have made a huge comeback recently.

This is a newly opened restaurant located in the ulu Changi area. The building used to be a British Army camp.

If you are driving, you can either park at the private carpark outside the restaurant or the public carpark at Turnhouse Road. Both are free parking.

Lots of greenery. Indeed a great way to enjoy food, nature and fresh air at the same time.

Old bicycle at the entrance.

Bar counter, with a mixture of modern and antique feel.

Kampong corner.

The restaurant is very large and spacious, maximum capacity can be up to 200 people.

The furniture here is reminiscent of the British Colonial period.

Relive the old days with these nostalgic items: old record player, old records,

Old typewriter and telephones.

Wooden window shutters on the ceiling.

Wooden chairs lining up near the ceiling and sofa skeleton frame hanging from the ceiling.

Appetizer: Wagyu Cubes – $22
Lightly seared wagyu cubes, with mushroom salsa, mesclun salad and japanese dressing.
The wagyu cubes are not too hard and taste good.

The Coast Salad – $16
Fresh prawns, pork slices, mixed greens, red chillis, local herbs, chopped peanuts, with homemade Vietnamese dressing.
Tossing the salad inside the glass jar was fun.
The Vietnamese dressing adds a refreshing touch to the greens.

Mussel & Clam Soup – $18
Tomatos, fennels, white wine, lemon juice, lightly creamed seafood broth, and chargrilled toast.
JAF finds this a little bit salty, but other than that, the soup is flavourful and goes well with the crispy bread.

Nasi Lemak – $16
Coconut rice, fried chicken, tiger prawns, sunny side up egg, fresh cucumber, ikan billis and sambal chilli.
The ikan billis here are big sized, and not forgetting the tiger prawns too! JAF likes the specially marinated chicken meat, a different taste from the normal chicken.

Prosciutto & Arugula Pizza – $22
16th month old aged Prosciutto, baby tomatoes, arugula, mozzarella cheddar, shaved parmesan cheese.

Truffle Mushroom Fettuccine – $21
Sauteed wild mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, with creamy truffle sauce, white wine reduction, shaved parmesan and fresh chives.
A vegetarian meal, the mushrooms are simply fabulous.

Cheese Burger – $26
180g Wagyu beef patty, melted smoked cheddar cheese, sliced mushrooms, bacon strips, mesclun salad and fries.
This burger is humongous!!!

Gula Melaka Panna Cotta – $12
Vanilla panna cotta, red beans, green jelly, gula melaka.

Sea salt caramel cheesecake

All in all, the food is not too bad, but it’s really all about the charming retro ambience which just put this place over the top.

Toa Payoh Lorong 4 Kway Chap

After trying so many Kway Chap stalls…..

THIS got to be JAF’s FAVOURITE Kuey Chap stall in Singapore! 🙂

Look at the queue! It is NEVER ending! The boss told us the customers start to queue up even before the stall opens at 5.00pm.

Boss, how much is it huh???

This is one of the reasons that draw the crowd here! The “Kuey” (flat sheet noodles) texture is soooo….SMOOTH, soooo…THIN and soooo…YUMMY!! Trust JAF, it just melts in your mouth!!! Oh, we love the broth too! It’s light, tasty, very flavourful and topped with fried shallots too! *Slurp!!*

JAF NEVER fail to order 2 plates of innards and pork belly here! Most importantly, they are carefully cleaned and does not leave a “porky” smell in the mouth. Each and every piece of meat is evenly braised. The pork belly’s skin is so soft and tender that you would not even bother about your calories the moment you put in your mouth! *Yums!*

They also have other side orders like fish cake, tau pok, eggs etc…and they taste as good too!

Total bill: $18.20
5 bowls of Kway Chaps and
1 serving of Kiam Cai (preserved vegetables)
2 servings of Innards + Pork Belly + Tau Pok + Egg + Fish Cake

Le Le Pot

When was the last time you ate at a steamboat restaurant at NETT price per pax WITHOUT gst or service charge? Well…JAF found one!!!

Our friend strongly recommended this restaurant at Tiong Bahru. When we reached there, we were shocked to see a LONG Q!
Tips: Advisable to call and make a reservation before you come.

So here we are, trying for our luck (YES! We didn’t call to reserve!!) to see if we were lucky to get a “slot”. The server told us that since we had no reservation, we would have to wait for a while…

“Tick-Tock”…”Tick-Tock”…. 15mins…30mins…We were soooo close to giving up because we were all dying of hunger! Then at the 45min the server came to us, “Sorry to keep you waiting, give us 10 more mins, that table is having their dessert now and asking for bill”. FINALLY…..

A very small and cosy restaurant…and YES, its PACKED! PACKED! PACKED!

很小…

Very refreshing Lychee Freeze and Ribena Freeze!
*The drinks are NOT included in the buffet, it is charged separately. Ranges from $2.50 – $3.80*

There are 5 types of soup – Chicken Herbal Soup, Coconut Crysthanamum, Tom Yum, Si Chuan Ma La and Laksa.
JAF’s choice – Coconut Crysthanamum and Tom Yum.
Tom Yum is so-so only but the Coconut Crysthanamum is AWESOME! Not at all the taste of coconut…very flavourful and it actually taste more like chicken soup base with a tint of crysthanamum taste. *Yums!* 🙂 Oh yes! As we know, most steamboat restaurants will normally top up “diluted” soup base when you finish your soup but over at Le Le, they will top up your soup with “original” soup base! *Thumbs up!*

JAF love their fried chicken wings! We ate like….hmmm….20 pieces (for 4 people only)!! They have other “cooked” items like fried wanton, calamari, chinese steam buns, pumpkin balls and sotong balls etc…

They serve thinly sliced fresh beef, chicken, pork, bacon, liver. Other than meat fillet items, seafood like fresh prawns, fish, cockles and clams etc are also included in the menu. Loads of vegetables for you to choose from too! JAF must say that there are soooo… many items (about 80 over) that we have yet to mention! *We actually wanted to take more pictures but the serving of food was so fast that we were all busy pouring the food into the steamboat and eating them! Hehe!*
You got to come here and try them all!

Last but not least…each person is entited to 1 FREE dessert! Yay!!! 🙂

Café Epicurious at The Rail Mall

Good Morning Singapore! What’s for breakfast today?

Epicurious Cafe has always been one of the top few choices for weekend breakfast or brunch. They have 2 branches: 1)The Rail Mall and 2)The Quayside. Haven’t been to any of them but heard from some reviews that it can be quite difficult to get a table at The Quayside during weekends so we decided to check out the Rail Mall branch instead.
*Fyi, the breakfast menu is the same for both branches.

Epicurious Cafe

We reached there around lunchtime, and we were quite surprised to see that only a few tables were occupied! Hmmm…could it be the location?

While looking at the menu, something caught our eyes! Ten Bucks Lunch (Weekday): Main course + Dessert + Drink! Maybe we should try this next time!

JAF’s choice – Epic Breakfast for 2 persons: (3 Choices $35, 4 Choices $40)
Egg Benedict / Baked Egg / Green Eggs and Ham / Pancake(3pcs) / French Toast(3pcs) / Two Eggs Scrambled or Fried, 2 Regular Coffee / Tea and 2 glasses of Orange Juice.
We’ve chosen the *4 Choices*.

Cuppa hot coffee to start your day!

We LOVE the French Toast! It is fried til crispy on the sides topped with icing sugar and freshly cut fruits. There is a slight tint of cinnamon taste, luckily it wasn’t too strong…just NICE for us! Ohhhh…we love the raisins bread they use for their french toast too! Probably that’s the reason why it stands out from the rest that we have tried before. *Definitely gonna order this again!*

Eggs Benedict + Green Eggs and Ham + Roasted Potates. Hmmm…there is nothing much to shout about on the “Eggs Benny”. However the “Green Eggs and Ham” is good! (Next pic)

Good choice! It’s actually scrambled eggs, mixed with spinach and cheese. In fact, we were asking the server to recommend and he strongly recommended the “Green”! He assured us that it’s really yummy and it’s his FAVOURITE too! Well, we decided to give it a go! Nice! We like!

We don’t find the pancake really special. Well, we will probably try other dishes the next time.

Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles

One of the sights you will never miss when you walk into “Pek Kio Hawker” is…this SUPER LONG queue!

This is the prawn soup that draws the huge crowd here everyday! Our $10 Hae Mee!
You can buy a bowl of Hae Mee here at $3, $5, $8 or $10.
– For $3, you will get a few slices of “deshelled and headless” prawns.
– For $5, you will get 3 to 4 “shelled” prawns.
– For $8 and $10, you will get 3 KING prawns served in a mini wok. (Ain’t sure what is the difference between the 2 prices but heard that the sizes of the prawns are different.)

If you like ‘Bak You Pok”(Pork Lard), you will definitely love their dry noodles. Loads of bak you pok and shallots sprinkled on top of the noodles. *Yums!!*

Morton’s Atrium Bar is a stand alone structure on the atrium of the 4th floor of Mandarin Oriental hotel

The round shaped interior has an oriental feel.

Appletini laced with cinnamon powder

Lychee Martini

Free flow of Filet Mignon Sandwiches! Served with mustard mayonnaise.
The sandwiches are passed out at 15-20 minute intervals. Only one at a time, but you can always wait for the next round.

Soft bun with tender, tasty, small but thick cut of steak. Together with the creamy mustard mayonnaise…LOVELY!

Guang Li Wanton Noodles @ Havelock

Are you craving for Wanton Mee at night but don’t know where to find one? Come to Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre! They are opened from 7pm – 10.15pm.

Fyi: JAF waited slightly more than half an hour for our Wanton Mee!! *6 people in the queue and the crowd kept coming in…* (>_<)

Where can you find a bowl of Wanton Mee @ $2.50 these days?

For the price of $2.50, it’s actually quite a big plate topped with a generous portion of char siew. Definitely very worthwhile! Hehe…

The texture of the noodles is very “Q”. The wantons are actually “so-so” only…
*What we like most is the chilli! Mix and toss the noodles with the chilli, then twirl them with the chopsticks and put in your mouth…Shiokadoo!!!

Ramen Competition @ Iluma

Last weekend, after catching a movie at Iluma, JAF decided to settle our dinner at the 4th level where there are a number of eateries. We were attracted to this huge-sized banner, and the ramen choices offered looked tempting to us. It was only after we sat down and looked through the brochure, then we realized that there is a ramen competition going on.

6 well-known ramen restaurants from Japan are invited to participate in this Singapore Ramen Champion Competition, which will run for one year starting from July 2011. They each have a stall located at Iluma@Bugis. Diners can cast their votes for their favourite ramen stall via SMS, Facebook and voting slips provided onsite. The ramen stall that gets the highest votes will be invited to set up a restaurant in Singapore next year after the competition.

The 6 participating restaurants are:

Bario from Tokyo – Bario Ramen

Taishoken from Tokyo – Mori Soba

Tetsu from Tokyo – Paitan Tsukeman Ramen

Gantetsu from Sapporo – Gantetsu Special Miso Ramen

Ikkousha from Hakata – Hakata Ajitama Ramen

Iroha from Toyama – Toyama Black Ramen

The Toyama Black Shoyu Ramen is Iroha’s signature ramen. The broth is dark, JAF learnt that a secret thick dark sauce prepared from black soybean is used. There is a light aroma of sesame.

The other one we ordered was the Bario Ramen. There was a very long queue, so it was just non-stop cooking of noodles for this Japanese chef.

Instead of the signature No.1 Bario Ramen, JAF ordered Maze Soba with Collagen Soup.

Do you see the huge amount of bean sprouts on top?! For those who do not like bean sprouts at all, it’s only natural for them to remove the whole chunk of bean sprouts. Initially JAF was skeptical of the massive amount of bean sprouts, but mixing them up together with the noodles and minced meat proved to be the correct move. The noodles soaked in the sauce were very saltish, but the crunchy bean sprouts actually provides a good balance and moderates the heavy flavour. Not forgetting the lightly flavoured soup which goes well with the bowl of ramen too.

Futomen, or thick ramen is used here. A rather fulfilling bowl of chewy noodles.

Old Airport Road Food Centre

Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of the many famous local eating places in Singapore. JAF rarely frequents there, but we decided we wanted to search for some nice and delicious food, and so we specially made a trip down to Old Airport Road Food Centre.

After a tour round the food centre, JAF found that there are two wanton mee stalls almost side by side along the row that is facing the road. Both look equally good with impressive certificates and newspaper cuttings, but JAF was more attracted to the stall with a electronic queue display.

Traditional bowl with picture of cock.

Egg noodles are served here, and cooked with black sauce.

The wantons and the char siew are nicely done.

Opening Hours: 11.30am – 11.30pm

An interesting stall name, “老夫子” is known as Old Master Q in English, a cartoon character originated from Hong Kong.

The fried kway teow here reportedly does not contain salt and MSG. Served on banana leaf, it’s fried with black soya sauce and sweet sauce. Overall quite flavoursome, though not all the cockles tasted good.

10am – 11.30pm (Saturdays & Sundays)

Now it’s time to try some freshly handmade chee cheong fun ($2/piece). What JAF loves most about the chee cheong fun is it’s soft, smooth and silky. JAF has never eaten such “yummier” chee cheong fun!
This is one dish JAF will happily return for over and over again.

MEDZS @ Orchard Central

Based on a Marché style setting, MEDZS is the first restaurant in Singapore to offer an assortment of Mediterranean food under one roof. The place is divided into different sections according to countries, namely: Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, Turkey, France and Italy. There are also the Dessert, Delicatessen and Med Garden sections.

We heard that this bar section here is well stocked with over 120 brands of beers, mostly from the Mediterranean countries.

Duck Leg Confit ($10.00) from France section.

Ribeye Steak from France section. Not too bad.

Bread Butter Pudding ($2.00) from Dessert section.

Gambas and Jamen Paella ($12.00), a Spanish/Morocco special.

Pork Belly skewer ($8.00) from Spain/Morocco/Tunisia section.
Well seasoned, super nice and juicy! This was our favourite dish for the night.

Margharita Pizza ($4.00) from Greece/Italy section.

Forgot the name of this dish and which section it came from…the taste? So so…

JAF can’t remember the name of the above, which is from the Turkey section…it’s lamb meat and we had only one thing to say: the taste sucks. JAF’s friend said the dish was very disappointing because it was very good when she had it the last time. Seems like the standard is not consistent.

Chicken Pastilla ($7.00)
This was the other skewer we tried, at least it made up for the previous lousy meat.

*supposed to be…Hot Plate Beef with Cheese and Mushroom from Turkey section.

But ended up all 4 of us felt that it tasted more like lamb than beef!!! We believed the chefs mixed up the meat because they were too busy. By then, we were all too full and tired to do anything about it, so we left the dish unfinished.

Rosti Potato with sour cream and Parma Ham…Tajines Chicken…and so many other dessert flavours…JAF will have to find another day to visit.
Furthermore there is a great offer: 25% discount off the total bill with DBS/POSB credit cards. Not sure if it’s till August 2011, so do make good use of that.

Ho Chi Minh Wrap & Roll

HCM Part 2
JAF and friend were shopping inside Hard Rock Cafe when one of the staff started chatting with us. He strongly recommended us to check out Wrap & Roll, and told us the nearest outlet was just a short walk away. So off we went.

Wrap & Roll – “Best Vietnamese restaurant chain 2010”.

Bright interior design and lively ambience. JAF loved the green walls!
It was lunch time when we stepped into the restaurant. Apparently this seems to be a popular place among the young local professionals.

We were surprised to see such a variety of rolls offered on the menu. Some of them come already wrapped and rolled while there are those that allow the customers to do themselves.

Vietnamese Pepsi.

How could we miss out the Fresh Spring Rolls (Gỏi cuốn)?

Fresh Spring Rolls with pork and prawns (VND 45000) (VND = Vietnamese Dong)

Steamed rice crepe rolls with grilled pork (Bánh ướt cuốn thịt nướng) (VND 35000)

Grilled pork with vermicelli & vegetables (Cuốn bún chả Hà Nội) (VND 58000)

Wrap some fresh vege and herbs, vermicelli and a piece of pork with a dry rice paper and roll it up.

Sticky rice with chicken wrapped in pandan leaves (Xôi gà cuộn lá dứa) (VND 55000)
We saw this particular dish on many tables as we walked past to our seats, so we decided to order a set.

Glutinous rice.

Yes, the chicken doesn’t look appealing, but the taste is not too bad.

However, do take note: the chicken must be eaten while it’s still hot, taste much better.

Ho Chi Minh Phở Eatery

Went on a short trip to Vietnam Ho Chi Minh three months back, and took some food pictures. Here is HCM Part 1.

Phở24 is a famous Vietnamese noodle restaurant chain in Vietnam. According to its website, “by June 2010, PHO24 has opened 77 outlets in Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, Da Nang, Vung Tau, Nha Trang, Binh Duong, Jakarta (Indonesia), Manila (Philippines), Seoul (Korea), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Sydney (Australia) and Hong Kong.”

Fresh Spring Rolls (VND 35000) (VND = Vietnamese Dong)
Wrapped with rice paper, ingredients include: Vietnamese rice vermicelli, vegetables, mint leaves and fresh shrimps.

Chilli to go with the fresh spring rolls. Ooooh….this is very spicy!

Egg in Broth (Trứng gà) (VND 10000)
Mix the egg well with the soup, it’s an interesting taste, quite nice.

Pho with Chicken (Phở gà) (VND 48000)

The usual ingredients that go with Pho.

The complete dish. Let’s tuck in!

Broken Rice with Shredded Pork, Pork Chop (Cơm tấm bì sườn) (VND 47000)
Was curious about “broken rice” and did a check on it.

The food here is cheap. Including drinks, we spent around $12++ Singapore dollars in total.

www.pho24.com.vn
**We saw quite a number of Phở24 outlets around. Just walk along the streets and you are bound to see one round the corner.

Tonny Restaurant @ Joo Chiat

Interested to check out some exquisitely prepared Chinese dishes at this new restaurant along Joo Chiat Road? Scroll down and see for yourself!

This is Tonny Chan, chef from Hong Kong and boss of Tonny Restaurant.
He has just moved over to Joo Chiat not long ago, so he decided that putting up his photo on the signboard outside the restaurant would be easier for his customers to identify the new place immediately.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon ($8/pax)
(Medley of Lobstero Egg White and Dried Scallop)
A white, mousse-like concoction of egg whites, scallops and lobster, it tastes light and airy, and you wonder where have all the ingredients gone? The fried spring roll skin acts as a “bowl” and sits on on top of a thick onion ring. It is indeed an amazing and unique dish, no wonder it won a Gold Award in a Chinese culinary competition in 2002.
Chef Tonny said he drew inspiration from Lee Ang’s Chinese movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”, when he needed a name for this dish that he specially created to participate in the competition.

Crispy Yam with Truffle Oil ($10)
This is a stunning dish. Yam is shredded to fine strips and deep fried. JAF simply love the presentation, it looks amazingly lovely. Crunchy on the bite, the yam strips are fragrant and delicious.
While we were eating, JAF kept smelling a strange burnt smell every now and then. But because the smell was very faint, JAF took little notice of it. Chef Tonny later told us that the smell actually came from the truffle oil, which is known to smell like gasoline. Most customers actually enjoy the flavour and aroma once they get used to the smell.

Pan-fried Salted Boneless Chicken with Five Spices ($18)
This is a delicious dish, very suitable for the aged and the kids because the bones have been removed. The pan-fried meat is tender and well seasoned throughout. JAF simply loves the hint of saltiness that lingers in the mouth.

Steamed Glutinous Rice with Chinese Sausage ($18)
JAF always feel that chinese sausages are a tad too salty, but the ones in the above dish are just nice.
These chinese sausages are specially prepared by a Hong Kong chef, and not as fatty as the local sausages.

Golden Banana Balls
Another art piece. This is a special dessert that is not included in the menu. So how did JAF get to try it? Well, that’s a secret, hehe.
Anyway, the reason why it’s not in the menu is because the preparation process is a little complicated, and it has to be served immediately after it’s done. The timing has to be right, if not the taste would be different.
The ingredients include bananas, mayonnaise, milk, strawberry sauce and a little lemon. On top of the balls are thin shreds of potato. Interesting combination, isn’t it?
And what is the best way to appreciate this dessert? Just put the entire ball into the mouth and let it melt away totally.

Cheap and Good Cze-Char @ Restaurant 121

This little “Gem” we are featuring ~ Restaurant 121, is hidden at a secluded corner of Hougang Avenue 3. It is supposedly well-known for “Klang” food, especially Fried Hokkien Mee *Dark sauce with pork lard*. However friends recommended that JAF should try the “Cze Char” first, so we shall come another time for their Klang specialities!

*It’s not very easy to locate so please refer to the map attached here. 🙂

It’s better to arrive early as the waiting time can be pretty long. Furthermore, it’s not easy to get a table because many patrons will be “hanging” around as early as 5pm to “chope” the tables.
*This is a small kopitiam so there are limited tables.

Most of the tables were occupied by huge groups of family members – at least 8 people and above. This must really be a popular “family gathering” place.

Our auntie server said, ”MUST try our Bittergourd Juice! Most Popular and very Healthy!” 🙂
Verdict: Doesn’t taste very bitter though. Lemony and refreshing aftertaste!

Prawn Roll ~ $6 and above.
One of the BIGGEST and Delicious prawn rolls JAF have eaten! They are so crispy yet not oily. The rolls are filled with minced meat and diced prawns. And oh Yes! You can taste the chunky chestnut as well! MUST order when you come here!

Salad Pork Chop ~ $8 / $12
Evenly seasoned pork chop topped with Restaurant 121’s very own salad sauce! The salad sauce is very creamy and the combination of capsicums, cucumber, tomatoes and celery makes this dish even more Yummillicious!

Garlic & Dry Prawns ~ $15 and above.
1 word – AWESOME! JAF love this dish! If you love garlicky stuff, this is for you! Fried individually, the prawns were so crispy we ate the entire prawns! Yes! Even the heads! What makes it so good is the sauce, which consists of tiny bits of fried garlic ~ flavourful with a tint of sweetness! *Yums!* 🙂

Curry Fish Head ~ $18 and above.
The fish head is very fresh and the gravy is very rich! You can taste the thick coconut gravy accompanied by generous servings of vegetables in it! Definitely a MUST to go with a plain bowl of rice.
*JAF ordered a second bowl of rice because the gravy just tasted so good! 🙂

Sambal KangKong ~ $6 / $10
JAF find this dish So-So. Can be pretty spicy if you can’t take much chilli, so remember to ask for less spicy if you order this dish.

Fried beans with Minced Meat ~ $8 / $12
We would recommend that you order this dish instead of the Kangkong. JAF love the taste of the sauce…very saucy and it just goes so well with the minced meat and fried garlic…WoOoo…Nice!

Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck

A close friend of JAF who stays near Ghim Moh has always shared with us that there is a SUPERB braised duck stall that we MUST TRY! So here we go…

Besides braised duck rice, there are noodles and porridge as well.
*This is the second stall. The first one is at Tanjong Pagar food centre.*

Price: $3.00 + $0.50(Braised Egg or “Lor Neng”) = $3.50
Verdict:The meat is well braised and tender…and the sauce is thick, smooth and saucy. Perfect combination!
JAF love the Vinegar Chilli too! Oh…and if you love herbal taste soup…you will love the soup here. Fyi…JAF asked for second helping! Hehe! 🙂

Every piece of meat is equally sliced and placed nicely.
Recommendation: Try the Braised Duck Drumstick…heard it’s even more tender and juicier!
*JAF actually wanted to order one drumstick but all sold out!*

Another JAF’s favourite – Duck Liver. Price: $0.50
Verdict: Cooked just right, not too hard, almost perfect!

F0rtyh4ands @ Tiong Bahru

F0rtyh4nds is one of the latest “Gem” of Tiong Bahru…

JAF came here a couple of times after hearing much about it but every time we had to walk away disappointed because the cafe is always PACKED!
*Fyi…F0rtyh4nds café is located opposite “Cheng’s Delicacies”.

It can be a little challenging to find this cafe because it’s actually tucked away in a small corner of the estate. You can park either along the road or at a car park that’s just right behind the cafe.

A chill-out corner outside the cafe.

A little narrow walkway from the entrance…JAF tried to take a picture of the cafe but the cafe was very packed so this was the only best picture we could take.

A BIG brunch menu greeted us as we were walking in…

This is the “backyard” of the cafe. JAF and friends were so HAPPY that we finally managed to find ourselves a comfortable spot to “squeeze” into. *Phew!* 🙂

When was the last time you had seen these plastic Salt and Pepper holders? Oh so nostalgic!

$5.00 for a cuppa latte
JAF had heard so much about the latte here. We have friends who purposely drive down just for a takeaway.
OMG! This has got to be the best latte JAF had ever drunk! It’s rich, thick and the aroma is simply heavenly!
So yes, JAF become a convert and have started buying latte takeaways too!

Eggs Benedict – $12.00
One of the BEST eggs benedict that JAF had eaten so far! For the price you are paying here, it’s definitely worth your every cent! Unlike some cafes that JAF had tried before, over here they use traditional English muffins with perfect “doneness” of the poached eggs, topped with superb, thick, creamy hollandise sauce and sundried tomatoes…finally the dish is complete with wild rockets on the side.

Bitter Chocolate Tart – $5.00
WooOooo…this is AWESOME! Recommended by the staff, the chocolate is so rich and creamy that it melts in your mouth. Trust JAF, even if you normally do not fancy bitter chocolate BUT for this particular one, once you start on it, you just cannot stop!

Carrot Cake – $4.50
Another recommended item! The carrot cake is moist yet it doesn’t leave a cloying feeling and most importantly, the sweetness level is just right.

Cheng’s Delicacies ~ Hainanese Curry Pork/Chicken Chop

“Cheng’s Delicacies – Hainanese Curry Pork/Chicken Rice” can be found at a little corner near Tiong Bahru market (also near Hua Bee Restaurant – “A Simple Bowl of Fishball Noodles at $2.50”) and it occupies the entire kopitiam. Besides Curry Pork/Chicken Chop, there are also other Hainanese delicacies like their popular pork belly, signature Sambal Prawns, Salted Duck soup etc…

Every piece of pork is “freshly” fried therefore it is really piping hot and crispy when served! Unlike other “oily” pork chop that JAF had eaten, the pork chop served here is not oily at all. So you surely won’t feel guilty about the calories! Hehe!!

The curry of this dish is rather unique. It doesn’t taste like the “normal” curry and the texture is a little creamy with a tint of herbs and spices. However JAF has one complaint ~ the spiciness of the curry is not consistent. It varied during the few visits that JAF had been here and there were times when the curry was really too spicy for us. But then again, that doesn’t stop us from going back… 🙂

So instead of the popular Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice that everyone frequents at Tiong Bahru, perhaps next time do give Cheng’s Delicacies – Hainanese Curry Pork/Chicken Rice a try when you are at the same area yeah. 🙂

Pig Trotters @ Zion Road

This is the THIRD entry on pig trotters. What to do? JAF just simply love pig trotters, maybe should consider sparking off a “Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles Series” yeah…hmm…Anyway, this time we are at Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap Braised Duck, situated at Zion Riverside Food Centre which is opposite Great World City.

*To check out the previous two entries, please click:
Pig Trotters @ Woodlands and Asia Grand Dim Sum.

JAF tries out the Kway Chap first. Thick gravy over duck meat, beancurd and some other other ingredients, this is a dish full of flavour.

Kway Chap one person

Braised Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles ($4/$5)

Pork front hocks are used here. Meat is tender and succulent, the velvety and delightful layer of fat and skin…OMG, is soft and airy light and JAF could feel the smooth flesh melting slowly away in the mouth. Wonderful sensation… 🙂
The meat has a slight gamy smell but it is not very distinct.
Overall, JAF has only one little complaint: the gravy is a tad too saltish, but fortunately there is rice to go along with.

And “Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles Series” fourth entry will be coming up soon anytime!

Chin Chin Hainanese Eatery

JAF was actually heading to our favourite “loti” cafe ~ YY Kafei Dian for a nice cuppa kopi and Kaya Toast (JAF “Tea-Time” category”) when we walked passed this Koptiam. What “lured” us inside was the huge crowd. So we decided to pop in and take a look.

“Chin Chin” Eating House…Bet many people have heard or even eaten their famous Chicken Rice and Hainanese Pork Chop. But JAF had never eaten before, so since we were here, we would try and share our thoughts with those readers who have not been here yet.

We LOVE the Hainanese “Chap Chye”!! It looks like a simple dish but the moment we put the cabbage in our mouth…WooOooo…it tastes soooo good! Love the soft yet crunchy texture of it. This dish is accompanied with black Chinese fungus, tangy “tang hoon” (cellophane noodles, also known as Chinese vermicelli, bean threads, bean thread noodles, crystal noodles, or glass noodles), “tao ki” and soaked fish maw…
Question… JAF’s friend was telling us it’s actually PIG SKIN instead of fish maw. Hmm…So maybe you would like to try it out and let us know? 🙂

Have you heard of this before: “To have a yummillicious plate of Chicken rice, you MUST start with good Chilli first!”. JAF checked out the chilli even though we didn’t order the chicken rice. Here’s our verdict: the chilli is good! It’s spicy and garlicky.
*JAF’s style – Mix the chilli with dark sauce and pour over the chicken rice! Yums!*

Instead of going for the chicken rice, JAF opted for the famous Chin Chin’s Hainanese Pork Chop. After taking the first bite, however, we were very disappointed. Compared to the Chap Chye, the pork chop was far from what we had expected. It is just like a plate of deep fried pork fillet garnished with potatoes, green peas, some slices of onion and last but not least, tomato sauce poured over it. Hmmm…will never order this dish again…

Joo Chiat Joo Joo

At the cross junction of Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road is a restaurant with 3 shops joined together under the same roof: Awfully Chocolate, Mooshi Bakes and the Japanese-inspired Joo Joo Kushiyaki.

Awfully Chocolate, Mooshi Bakes and the Japanese-inspired Joo Joo Kushiyaki。

Young and energetic staff welcomed us the moment we stepped in from the side entrance. The cafe is comfortably spaced out, with clean white walls and simple wood furnishings.

The place was still quite empty when we reached there.

After we settled down at the innermost corner of the cafe, the crowd started to come in. We realised there were two different groups of customers. From around 7+pm till close to 9pm, the crowd consisted mainly of students and youngsters. And after 9pm, we observed that there was a total change of crowd. The patrons consisted mainly of families, and more matured couples who came in mainly for desserts.

Back to the menu, it’s pretty straightforward.

Kishiyaki Set for 2 ($36.90++):
There were 4 of us, but we intended to try some other food, so we decided to just share a set for 2.

Clam Broth

Creamy Miso Soup with Pork Belly
JAF personally like this soup, the taste is something out of the ordinary.

Food was served real fast. Within few minutes, almost all the food were out on the table. After taking pictures of the soups, JAF friends were too hungry and eager to wait for JAF to finish taking the pictures…ONE against THREE, that was really a tough fight! JAF could only surrender…hence, very limited photos available… 😦

Items: garlic rice wrapped around by a fairly large piece of seaweed, crispy chicken skin, chicken thigh with tare, quail eggs wrapped with pork belly, shitake with tare, salmon belly and miso soup…
One of the items (salmon belly) listed was not available, so we got to replace it with a Grilled Beef Tendon with House Dressing.

Prawn with Indian spices served with Okra.
Okra” is actually another name for lady’s fingers. The prawns are ok, but JAF favoured the okra more.

Besides the Kishiyaki set, we ordered 2 other dishes.

Japanese Chargrilled Cha-Siu Don ($13.90). The pork belly is not too bad.

Medium-done Ribeye Steak Set ($18.90)

JAF and friends concluded that the steak was the best among all that we had eaten.

Overall, JAF and friends think that food served here is quite decent and tasty but a little too much on the salty side.

After dinner, getting some desserts from either Awfully Chocolate or Mooshi Bakes proved to be too irresistible.

This has a cute name: Gooey.
It’s soft and creamy. For those who love cinnamon, this is the dessert for you.

Gooey.

Mooshi Cream Puff ($3.90)

Drinks wise, can try this which mixes green tea and lime together. Both hot and cold are available. ($3.20)

Dong Dong Curry Chicken and Tom Yam Soup @ Clementi

First time here at Clementi West Food Centre…it’s a big place indeed.

The original plan was to try out the duck rice stall JAF’s fren had been talking about, but alas, it was the stall’s rest day. Too bad… 😦
Hmm…how about this Dong Dong stall then? We saw a number of customers queuing up in front and the stall looked very welcoming to us too.

Dong Dong offers a variety of dishes: claypot cuisines like claypot sesame chicken and claypot tofu, fish soup/beehoon, vermicelli, gong bao chicken rice, teriyaki chicken rice, thai style chicken rice and a few others.

We noticed the queuers in front all seemed to be ordering either the curry chicken or the tom yam seafood soup. So of course we followed suit.

Tom Yam Seafood Soup + Rice or Beehoon ($4.00)

JAF’s friend had this for lunch. Looks good and there are lots of ingredients.

Curry Chicken + Rice or Beehoon ($4.00)

The curry is definitely a good choice for those who can’t take it too spicy. And the chicken meat is tangy and juicy enough. Worth mentioning is the generous serving of chicken meat pieces. JAF was extremely full by the end of the meal.

Check out this soya bean drink / grass jelly drink stall. A very popular stall with a super long queue.

The Sun Coffee Planet

JAF would always pass by Zion Road Food Centre when on the way to Great World City for a movie. But what really caught our eyes was this cafe “The Sun Coffee Planet”.

Does it sound like an “Ang Moh” coffee joint to you? So what kind of food could be found here at this cafe? Out of curiosity, we decided to check it out.

First thing we noticed was the opening hours ~ 24hours! The café is a simple “kopitiam” layout. As for the menu, it offers many local dishes at fairly reasonable prices.

When was the last time you had a cup of Ice Bandung?
Price: $1.50

JAF likes this Lemon Mint Soda. Very refreshing and thirst quenching on a hot day!
Price: $2.50

Nasi Lemak recommended by the staff.
Price: $4.80
The texture of the rice is cooked just right, not too sticky and you can taste the aroma of the coconut in it. If you like sweet chilli sambal, you will love the chilli here! It is not too spicy and when you mix it with the rice ~ yummy! As for the fried chicken wing, nothing too special.

Another highly recommended dish is this Penang Prawn Noodle.
Price: $5.30
JAF love this dish! The broth is very thick and very tasty, so good that you can drink it on its own! This dish comes with 3 big prawns and pieces of fish cake. What remained at the end of the meal was a “cleaned up” bowl with not a single drop of soup left in the bowl! Definitely going to order this the next time we come here again!

New Italian Restaurant ~ Da Luca

Do you like Italian food? Newly opened for around 4 months, this nice and cosy Italian restaurant impressed JAF so much that all other entries are shoved aside for the moment. Simply can’t wait to share with JAF’s loyal readers!

Love the simple, unpretentious and homely décor, which exudes a vibrant ambience.

Prosciutto E Melone $21.90
~ Parma Ham 24 month with Rock Melon

It is interesting to learn that the more matured the Parma Ham, the better taste it is. Did some research online and found this quote:

“A properly matured Parma Ham® should be of a good pale-red colour, mild, sweet-flavoured and tender, and at its best is perhaps the most delicious food in all Italy.”
–Elizabeth David, Italian Food (Penguin Books, 1954)

(Prociutto di parma)

JAF finds out why this dish matches Parma Ham and rock melon together: the Parma Ham has a somewhat salty flavour and when wrapped around the rock melon, balances beautifully with the sweetness of the rock melon. This is a combination that really works!

* More info about Parma Ham can be found at wikipedia and wisegeek.

Rucola Al Balsamico Con Pere E Parmigiano $13.90
~ Wild Rocket Salad with Pear, Parmesan in Balsamic Dressing
Fresh and clean taste in your mouth. For those who do not like the strong taste of the rocket leaves, there are other salad choices as well.

Pizza Con Tonno Cipolle E Rucola $22.90
~ Tomato with Mozzarella, Tuna Onion and Rocket

This big-sized, flavour-packed pizza is simply lovely! The taste of tuna onions, melted mozzarella cheese, aromatic rocket leaves makes the pizza totally worthwhile from the first bite to the last.

Among the fairly broad choice of pastas offered on the menu, all are handmade except one. So of course the pastas are MUST-TRIES.
We had two totally different pastas:
Pappardelle Pasta – broad and flat ribbon-shaped
Angel Hair Pasta – long and thin.

Pappardelle Sull’ Anatra $22.90
~ Homemade Pappardelle Pasta with Braised Duck and Italian Parsley

Capellini Al Granchio E Zucchini $22.90
~ Angel Hair Pasta with Crab meat, Zucchini and Tomato Sauce

The overall taste of the Pappardelle Pasta is heavier in comparison with the lighter and more delicate Angel Hair Pasta. Both are equally good, and the savoury flavours linger in the mouth, so satisfying and simply divine .

JAF and friends were FULL after wiping out all the food, but the strong craving for desserts did not stop us from ordering the tiramisu.

*No tiramisu photo because the camera battery went flat!!! 😦

Tiramisu $10.90
~ Mascarpone Cream Cheese with Sponge Coffee and Chocolate
The tiramisu was nicely-flavoured, but maybe it could do with more liquor.

Last but not least, the service here is really good. It was a crowded night when we went, but we enjoyed the friendly, polite and swift service.

The restaurant owner Chef Luca even came out to personally shake hands with us before we left the restaurant. With such pleasant food and service experience, JAF will be back for sure.

New Udon Thai Food (BBQ Steamboat)

If anyone asks you about the famous eatery at Golden Mile, the first name that pops out of your mind must be “Thien Kee Steamboat Restaurant” right? Well, instead of the common restaurant that everyone knows, JAF is going to recommend another eatery at Golden Mile – “Na Na Thai Food”. This restaurant specializes in “BBQ+Steamboat buffet”.

The “Secret” weapon of this Thai restaurant is their “UFO” pot! The food tastes so GOOD because it uses CHARCOAL to cook!

Another “Secret” weapon is the chilli sauce. *It tastes pretty similar to Coca’s chilli sauce* JAF’s favourite: add the chopped garlic + chilli padi…and mixed them well together…WooOOoo…sets you on FIRE! One word to describe – “SHIOK!” And guess what? You can buy this chilli sauce at Golden Mile! 🙂

JAF had the Seafood+Pork set. Price – $39.90 (including free flow of charcoal)
Other sets such as chicken and beef are available too.

The set comes with vegetables and other stuff as well, cabbage + “chye sim” + golden mushroom + eggs + authentic Thai’s vermicelli.

JAF’s BBQ+Steamboat night starts now!

Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant

One of the cheapest yet delicious Cze Char you can find at Toa Payoh! Highly recomended by JAF! 🙂

Check out the crowd!
Tips: Come early because it’s always crowded by 6.30pm!

P/S: Some of the dishes are actually not listed on the menu! Remember to ask.

Where can you find “Soup of the Day” (Carrot Pork Rib Soup) @ $4 for 3 pax??!!
A MUST try dish! *The ingredients in the soup are definitely worth the price!*

Their Signature Dish ~ Beancurd with preserved vegetable
(Price : $7, $9, $13)
The “toufu” is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. JAF love the lightly crisp preserved vegetable and it’s so tasty that you can eat it with plain rice. *yums!* 🙂

(Price $7, $9, $11)
Most people would normally go for Salted Yolk Prawns but JAF decides to try this which is something different. We are surprised that it tastes as good as the Salted Yolk Prawns! The pork is very tender and juicy, and the salted yolk is evenly spread to every piece of the pork.

(Price $9, $11, $13)
This dish is a similar version of “Mai Pian Xia” (Cereal Prawns). The squid is fried and coated with cereal. The texture of the squid is just right, not over cooked and most importantly, not oily.

There are also other signature dishes like “Strawberry Prawns”, “Fishhead curry”, “Asam Fish” and many many more that you must try!

NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head @ Bedok

Anyone heard of NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head? It was featured on both Channel 8 food program “Where The Queue Starts”, and the papers before. It’s situated in the NTUC Foodfare coffeeshop near to Bedok Bus Interchange.
JAF and friends happened to pass by, and since one of them had tried before and like it, we decided to settle our lunch here.

The curry fish head takes some time to prepare, so here we are waiting patiently for its arrival.

Piping hot curry fish head served in a big claypot, big enough for 3 of us.

(Photo deleted. Published in Singapore Guide Book by Cross Border HongKong.

Ingredients inside the claypot include: tau pok, yam, brinjal, lady’s fingers etc.

(Photo deleted. Published in Singapore Guide Book by Cross Border HongKong.

The fish head meat is fresh and tender. The “snow-white” meat contrasted starkly with the deep rich colour of the curry.

As for the curry taste, the friend who had tried it before commented that it was slightly different from the other time he ate it. Still not bad, just that something was lacking.

Well, for JAF who is trying it for the first time, the overall taste is still delicious, though it may not be spicy enough for spice lovers…

Heard that this Yong Tau Foo stall also not bad…

We heard that the surrounding area including this coffeeshop will be reconstructed to become a big shopping mall. So…where will all the stalls be relocated to? Will we still see NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head around?

Free Pizza or Pasta on Ladies Night!

JAF was introduced to this Italian restaurant by a friend. As the food was pretty decent, we decided to head there again. We were puzzled when the server asked if we were keen on their special promotion ~ “Ladies’ Night”. Heard about free drinks but free FOOD for ladies???

Yes, FREE Pizza or Pasta for each lady on Wednesday nights!

*Take note: Buono’s Ladies’ Night Promotion is ONLY on every WEDNESDAY!
As long as there is one lady at the table, the server will automatically recommend the choices available for the “free” pizzas and pastas.

Since there were 2 of us (ladies) here, we decided to choose one each.

Every meal comes with their freshly made garlic bread. *Yums!*

JAF was wondering how big the portion for a “free” pasta would be like?
Answer: The dish is definitely good enough as a main course! Very generous portion and ingredients! *Impressed* 🙂

Orecchiete Di Mare with Zucchini, Clams, Calamari in Seafood Tomato Sauce.

Verdict: Pasta is cooked to the right texture, sauce is not too creamy yet you can taste the sweet tomato flavour.

*The term “Calamari” is commonly used by Greek, Italian and Spanish languages. When the squid becomes a food, the culinary name “Calamari” is used instead.

An open concept huge oven where you can take a peek at the chef making pizzas!

At first JAF thought that only 1 slice of free pizza would be served but we were so wrong! It was a HUGE whole pizza, with 8 HUGE slices!!!

Margarita Pizza ~ Plain Pizza with Mozzarella Cheese. Instead of having it plain, we added ham and mushroom on it.
*Take note: Additional charges for additional toppings. (Classic Ham ~ $5, Mushroom ~ $2)

Verdict: Superb! The pizza is freshly made and the thin crust is so crispy. When you “tear” the pizza apart, the melted mozzarella cheese is “drooping” in the air!

JAF felt that 3 persons would be just nice to share the pasta and pizza. However if you are not able to finish the food, you can request for “tabao” even though the items are free. 🙂

Hmm…guess what is this?

Buono’s Specialty Tiramisu

Verdict: We all know that Tiramisu is one of the most popular desserts in an Italian restaurant, so of course we must order Buono’s version to try out. The tiramisu here is freshly made daily. The combination of mascarpone and whipped cream is just right, not too light nor heavy, and it melts in your mouth! Definitely a GOOD choice made! 🙂

Breakfast/Brunch @ Choupinette

Before JAF starts rattling off, we decide to check out the origin of this entry’s topic ~ Eggs Benedict. Many of us love this dish but how many of us know about the story behind it? After searching online, we found many different versions to the origin of Eggs Benedict so we shall share just 2 of them.
*If you would like to know the other versions, you can look up “Wikipedia”.

Here you go…
Version 1:
In 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street broker with a hangover wandered into the Waldorf Hotel in New York and ordered “some buttered toast, crisp bacon, two poached eggs, and a hooker of hollandaise sauce”. The Waldorf’s legendary chef, Oscar Tschirky, was so impressed that he put the dish on his breakfast and luncheon menus after substituting Canadian bacon for crisp bacon and a toasted English muffin for toasted bread.

Version 2:
In the 1860s, a Wall Street banker named LeGrand Benedict and his wife, regular patrons of Manhattan’s Delmonico’s restaurant, complained that they were bored by the menu. The response of Chef Charles Ranhofer was toasted muffins topped with ham, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. This version is further supported by the fact that Charles Ranhofer’s cookbook “The Epicurean” (published in 1894) contains a recipe called Eggs a’ la Benedick (Eufa a’ la Benedick).

So now you get it? 🙂

JAF had read so much about Choupinette from other food bloggers that we decided to hunt for it. This little cafe can be found along Bukit Timah Road. It’s quite easy to locate. Once you see Coronation Plaza (if you are driving), you turn left to the next lane. Parking can be quite limited around the estates so the other alternative is to park inside Coronation Plaza.

*Choupinette

JAF went on a weekend and the cafe was packed! So we would suggest that you make a reservation before you decide to hop by this cafe.
They have freshly baked daily bread *cheese focaccia, family country bread, sour dough and many more*.

Spoilt for choices? Hmm….What shall we order?

Caught a glimpse of this cosy corner…

Here comes the main dish of the day! Eggs Benedict with a fresh juice and any hot drink ~ $20+.

Verdict: WoOoo..they taste as good as they looked! We love the crispy toast with ham and most importantly, the poached eggs were nicely done! Oh yes! how can we forget the yummillcious hollandaise sauce! *Thumbs up!*

The English Coq: Scrambled, poached or fried eggs with pork or chicken sausage, mushrooms, a ‘tomato provencale’ and a wholemeal bread roll with a fruit juice and any hot drink. ~ $19+

Verdict: JAF personally felt that this is a NOT “must try” set. Nothing really special, the mushroom is a little dry and the only “plus” point would most probably be the home-made wholemeal bread roll.
Pls do take note that EXTRA butter or jam cost $1.

Lobster Porridge @ Long Xia Zhou Shi Jia

Craving for something hot and soupy? JAF decided to hop by this “Very Recommended” restaurant suggested by our friend. She told us that the Lobster porridge is a MUST try!!!

Fresh Vegetable Juice ~ $4.50
The waitress strongly recommended this juice the moment we sat down. We were afraid of the “raw” vegetable taste but the waitress assured us not to worry and said it’s the “Top Listed” drink in the restaurant!

Verdict: The waitress was right! It tastes just like any ordinary juice except that it is not very sweet. Most importantly, the “raw” vegetable taste is totally absent.

Can you see what is in there?

Signature Lobster Porridge ~ $29.90.
We were lucky that we came during the “Promotion Period: 1 for 1”. (Not sure if it’s still on though.)

As described in their menu:
Signature Lobster Porridge won the Super Gold Medal Award in the 2006 International Culinary Competition. Described as “heavenly delicious” by the judges, this signature dish features succulent lobster meat in superior stock.

Verdict: 1 word ~ “SHIOKALLICIOUS” We love the broth!! It is very sweet and reminded me of traditional Teochew fish porridge. The lobster is not huge but the entire dish is so good that we literally “cleaned” up the bowl without leaving behind a single grain of rice! 🙂

Pan Fried Kurobuta ~ $18
What is Kurobuta?
As described in the menu:
Kurobuta Black Hog, prized for juiciness, flavour and tenderness, is pinked-hued and heavily marbled. Like Kobe beef, Kurobuta refers to a breed of pig and the way it is raised. Got it?

Verdict: Hmm…JAF don’t find this dish very special. It tasted like the Singapore version of “honey pork” except the meat is more tender.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg ~ $12
When our friend mentioned this dish, the first thought was…”Huh? You mean the lotus we normally cook in peanut and pork ribs soup?” She said,”Ya! You be surprised!!”

Verdict: And yes!! We were!! This is a MUST…MUST try!!! The lotus is thinly sliced, fried and coated with salted yolk. It’s not oily and yet crispy! Oh one more thing, it’s very ADDICTIVE!! You definitely would not stop at one!!!

A Little Tour @ Tiong Bahru Market

Happy New Year! First entry for year 2011!

Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre is one place closely linked with great yummy eats, which most of us should be familiar with.
JAF is not a regular visitor here, so after walking one round, we decided to just focus on one side of the food centre and pick out 4 stalls.

JAF suddenly had a craving for fried oyster omelette after spotting the above stall.

We like the crisp fried eggs and the not too gooey starch mixture. There are about 4 oysters for the cheapest order of $3.00.
Together with the tangy chilli sauce, this is a very likeable dish.

Closed on Wednesdays

Chwee kueh (steamed rice cake made from rice flour) has always been one of JAF’s favourite snack, so this is one food that cannot be missed.
Apparently this stall is quite famous and had won a few awards: “Lianhe Wanbao Classified Ads Favourite Stall”, ”The Greenbook Best Food Award 05/06” and ”Makansutra 2009”.

4 for $1.00, 6 for $1.50, 8 for $2.00.
The chwee kueh is a tad soft, there are bits of black sesame seeds within the chye poh, but we felt that the chye poh (preserved radish) topping could be more savoury.
Still, there is one thing worth mentioning: the chye poh is not as greasy like some other places.

Jian Bo Shui Kueh
#02-05
6.30am to 11pm daily

Is it true that the quality of a stall’s food is based on the length of the customer queue?
Well, there is a constant flow of customers to this Teochew Fishball noodles stall, so JAF was compelled to join in the queue too.

At first sight, the bowl of noodles certainly looks tempting. One look at the shape of the fishballs, and you know they are handmade and bound to taste good. Truly, they do not have much of the fishy taste and the springy texture is definitely different as compared to the factory made fishballs.

Kway Teow is smooth in texture.

Chili based. The more you eat, the spicier it gets.
Standby tissues for your runny nose and sweaty forehead.
Price: $2.50/$3.00

Teochew Fishball Noodle Dry/Soup
#02-13

While queuing up for the Teochew Fishball Noodles, JAF was attracted to the photos posted at the neighbouring stall. Seems like artistes such as Mai Hao Wei and Charmaine Sheh (Hong Kong actress) had visited the stall before, and it was specially recommended by Channel U food program “Makan King” as well.

There are quite a number of varieties: curry fishhead (half $18, whole $28), curry fish meat ($6), curry pork ribs ($4), curry mutton ($3/$5), curry chicken ($3) and curry vegetable ($3). You can choose either rice or bread for $0.50.

We ordered the curry chicken. One sip of the curry and oooh…that’s so hot!
Conclusion: the curry is super thick and luscious, and really spicy.

Tender chicken meat.

This stall is just beside Jian Bo Shui Kueh. Initially, we had planned to try out the “tow kwar pop”, but our stomachs were too full after so much food. Next time.

Sarang @ Orchard Central

Sarang (“Love” in Korean) is a restaurant all Korean fanatics would probably make it a point not to miss out.

The restaurant is situated on the 7th floor at Orchard Central, with an open view of the city.

The alfresco area offers a nice dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere.

What’s most striking about the interior design is a red wall covered with photos of their chefs and a giant heart-shaped photo collage.
Curious about the photos of the chefs on the wall, JAF checked out with one of the servers, and learnt that they are all part of a team of 8 Korean chefs, working on a rotation basis with 2 rest days per week.

This is a clearer view of the 8 chefs.
*Picture is taken from Sarang’s website.

Sarang Japchae $6.80
– Stir-fried vegetable vermicelli tossed in sesame oil
This is our number ONE favourite among all the dishes we ordered. We like the light fragrance of the sesame oil taste.

Ginseng Porridge (Yeongyang dakjuk) $6.80
– Chef’s signature Korean ginseng and chicken porridge
Mild ginseng taste, tasty and delicious. This is our number TWO favourite.
The portion is not very big, good for maybe 2-3 persons, unless there are porridge lovers around.

DJ rice (Sarang dolsot bibimbap) $8.80
– Authentic Korean rice with assorted vegetables, served in hot stone pot

Drunken Pork (Yangnyeom samgyeop gui) $15.80
– Grilled pork belly served with kimchi on a sizzling hot plate
It is marinated in red wine, garlic, salt and pepper. Quite oily, but the seasoning is not too bad. Just that JAF thought the meat could be more tender since it’s the belly portion.

Rain (Pa jeon) $8.80
– Scallion pancake served on a hot plate
A so-so dish…

Cute Fingers (Tteok kkochi) $4.80
– deep fried rice cakes served with yuja citron sauce
The savoury taste of the yuzu sauce together with the rice cakes, form an interesting combination. Our number THREE favourite.

We were very much attracted to the drinks’ photos inside the menu and decided to order 2 of them to try. To our disappointment, the drinks tasted pretty normal and nothing too special.

A quiet meal @ Tavolo

Wondering where to go for a nice meal during the Christmas festive period?

Tavolo is an open concept restaurant that delivers a casual yet stylish atmosphere. The place is not very big and there are not many seats around.

First is a healthy dish with lots of green.
Arugula Salad $12 – arugula (rocket) leaves, avocado, caramelized beet, walnut & feta cheese tossed in balsamic vinegar dressing.
The balsamic dressing is mixed with honey, adding a zing of sweetness and freshness on the taste buds.

*What is “Arugula”?
Arugula is very low in calories and is a good source of vitamins A and C, folate, calcium, and magnesium. It can be eaten raw, added to salads with other salad greens, or cooked. It is worth noting that the older the leaves, the more intense the flavor. Younger leaves are tender and have a milder taste and therefore are best for salads. Older leaves may be slightly bitter and are more appropriate for sautéing or steaming.

*The term “balsamic” actually means “restorative” or “health giving”. Thus balsamic dressing is often regarded as a healthy choice of condiment for food.

Piadina $11 (it’s an Italian Grilled Flat Bread with no Yeast) – pesto, sun dried tomato, shaved parmesan.
The intensely green and fragrant pesto sauce obviously takes the centre stage. It is very tasty…JAF‘s favourite!
A “must” dish strongly recommended by the restaurant in-charge, the piadina (an Italian Grilled Flat Bread with no Yeast) comes with a few choices of toppings, and one whole piece can feed two very comfortably.

See how thin the piadina is. It’s not too filling and the stomach can have some more room for other food.

* The “Piadina flatbread” is probably the most famous food icon of Romagna, an area east of the city of Bologna that covers the provinces of Forlì-Cesena, Rimini and Ravenna. Traditional food (fish from the sea coast and meat from the hills), wine producers and good life style, make this area very attractive.

http://ol.mingpao.com/cfm/food10.cfm?File=20100706/fob01a/veb1.txt

Fettuccine al Salmone $26 – homemade fettuccine, fresh salmon, capers, garlic, white wine, tomato, light cream.
The homemade fettuccine is soft yet chewy…sauce is super good, giving the dish a tantalizing aroma…another JAF’s favourite.
For those who do not like creamy pasta, this is one good choice.

Sauce all wiped out!

Wind down, relax and have some coffee and desserts at the sofa area – good for chilling out, 🙂

Tiramisu $10. Hmm…slightly disappointing…it’s a bit dry…

Semifreddo Pralinato $10 – signature handmade gelato, praline semifreddo.
The dessert was a tad sweet for JAF.

*Praline: a family of confections made from nut and sugar syrup, and is an ingredient used in many cakes, pastries and ice creams.
Semifreddo: Italian for “half cold” and refers to a variety of cold or frozen desserts, very similar to ice cream.

Quiet ambience, good food, attentive service. To sum up, it was an enjoyable dining experience indeed for JAF.

A simple bowl of Fishball noodles at $2.50

Ever wonder what is good for breakfast on a Sunday morning? JAF came upon this old authentic kopitiam while heading to Tiong Bahru market for the famous “Lor Mee”. So instead of “Lor Mee”, we decided to stop over here…

Old signboard which you hardly see these days…
The setting of this kopitiam is really “old school”. After we stepped in, we realised that besides the kopi stall, there is another stall selling Fishball noodles. Yup! Only 2 stalls in the kopitiam!

Check out the Kopi stall’s “Antique” counter!

What is morning without a hot cuppa Kopi right?
The kopi served here is really thick and good. And the sweet aroma wakes you up!

While waiting for our noodles to be served, we saw many plates of “Loti” on the other tables around us. So we ordered 2 slices to try out. The bread is thinly sliced and lightly toasted, accompanied with a spread of thick Kaya and freshly cut butter from the fridge. One word to describe ~ Awesome!
*Price: 2 Kopi + 1 set Loti = $2.20*

Having breakfast while listening to your bird sing…That’s life 🙂

Instead of having all the ingredients mixed together with the noodles, over here they are served separately. JAF love their “Hee Kiao” (Fish dumplings)! No fishy taste and you can’t seem to get enough of them! As for the fishballs, they are very bouncy and tasty.
*Hee Kiao ~ a type of small dumpling made with fish meat paste wrapping a small bit of minced meat*

Fried garlic and shallots are sprinkled on top of the Kway Teow, hmm…delicious.

What is fishball noodles without “Mee Pok”? The “Mee Pok” has a smooth texture and there is a hint of vinegar too. And of course not forgetting JAF’s favourite ~ “Bak You Pok” (Pork Lard)!

When was the last time you used a pair of wooden chopsticks?

Foong Kee Wanton Mee

Delicious Wanton Mee…MUST try “Char Siew” (Sweet Roasted Pork)…Crispy “Sio Bak” (Roasted Pork)…oooh…
After hearing so much about this particular stall at Keong Saik Road from a close friend, JAF would not want to miss out such a “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED” place! The only troublesome part is the limited parking space. This vicinity has quite a number of good eateries hence it’s always packed especially during lunch time. If you are driving, finding a carpark lot can be a headache!
*Take note* Parallel parking please.

Here we are!!!

Surprisingly we didn’t have to wait too long for our delicious plate of roasted pork and duck to be served. The “Sio Bak” is really good and the skin is Soooo crispy. Love the “Char Siew” too! Very tender and sweet. *MUST try!!!

*Apologies for the absence of Char Siew picture…the Char Siew was ‘hidden” under the Roast Duck.
As for the Roast Duck, JAF felt that it’s just so-so…

Crispy Goodness!! *JAF ordered a 2nd serving of the “Sio Bak”!!!*

The noodles are cooked just right and the texture is very “Q”!!

Just Opened ~ Penang Road Cafe @ Novena Ville

Guess most of us must have heard of or tried Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice at Novena Ville before. Yes, it’s very famous and always crowded.
But no, this entry is not about the chicken rice, it’s about Penang Road Cafe, a newly opened food cafe just 3 units away from Wee Nam Kee.

Had a brief chat with the boss, a Malaysian but now a Singapore PR. He and his wife from Penang started this family business just around 1 month ago. His wife works in the kitchen as the dishes on the menu are created from the wife’s hometown recipes.

A rather spacious, simple and down-to-earth interior.

Maybe because the cafe is still new, there are only around 5-6 choices on the menu, including Char Kway Teow, Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee, Penang Asam Laksa…

We ordered the Char Kway Teow and Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee.

Char Kway Teow…hmm…taste is passable…nothing special.

Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee…the soup-based version.

Mixture of beehoon and mee, with bean sprouts, kangkung, eggs, sliced pork and prawns laid on top, garnished with fried shallots.

JAF is no real expert on Penang food, but finds the prawn-based stock aromatic and savory enough to give it a more than average score. Since the lady boss is from Penang, surely it must be the real thing? Maybe you guys can try out this new eating place and share your views on the authenticity of the dishes.

Pretty decent food here if you are not looking for too many varieties. Let’s hope the menu will be improved after things get more settled down.

No service charge. But take note that the cafe only accept payment by cash terms.

Pontian Wanton Noodles

After writing on the congee stall at Queen Street’s Albert Complex food market not long ago, JAF moved on to the nearby OG Complex and tried out the Pontian wanton noodles stall situated on the ground floor just outside of the building.

It faces the eateries at The Bencoolen building and is not so noticeable. This is just one of the many branches spread all over Singapore at various food centres and hawker centres.

There are actually 3 stalls here, other than the drinks and the wanton noodles, there is also a katong laksa stall. But it’s pretty obvious the customers are here for the wanton noodles.

Seating area…we reached before the noon crowd came in.

A look at the prices: normal size is $3.00. You can choose to top up either the noodles or the wantons (dumplings) for an additional $0.50.

This is the “famous Pontian wanton noodles” topped up with extra noodles. According to their signboard: “handmade noodles * very tasty * no preservatives * take away noodles won’t soften”.
Really? Takeaway noodles won’t soften? Hmm…and then JAF‘s friend responded immediately: “It’s true leh…I tapau before, the noodles never got soften or soggy!” ~ now, isn’t this a strong testimonial?

Overall, the chilli-based noodles taste good, though JAF wouldn’t mind just a few more slices of char siew.

Small and crunchy fried wantons ($3.00). Because of the size, you will find yourself popping one after another into the mouth, and before you realise it, more than half the plate is gone.

When it’s time to leave, JAF looked around and observed that almost all the noodles on the plates were completely wiped out. 2 boys sitting behind us also seemed to enjoy their noodles alot. Nice food speaks for itself indeed.

Sin Kee Chicken Rice @ Mei Chin Road

So there are two “Sin Kee Chicken Rice” stalls: one at Margaret Drive and the other at Mei Chin Rd…which one is the real McCoy? Hmm…after reading many reviews from bloggers, JAF decided to head to Mei Chin Rd!
*Tips: Fish Porridge is another MUST try from the stall too!*

When JAF reached, we were expecting a huge crowd because it was a public holiday. However there wasn’t much crowd at all, except for a few occupied tables.
Our 1st thought: “Sold out?!” Hmmm…shouldn’t be…it was only 2pm…
BUT…we were soooo WRONG! All the food at Sin Kee Chicken rice stall were sold out including the Fish Porridge too! The next batch of chicken could only be out in an hour’s time!
We could not believe what we heard! No way! We came all the way here! So DIE DIE must wait!

JAF‘s way of eating chicken rice *Probably similar to some of you as well* = Pour the dark sauce and chilli over the rice and mix all together. But WAIT! This time we did not! The fragrance of the rice is so good and you can taste every single grain of rice…WooOoo…we just ate it on its own. If you are someone who doesn’t like oily chicken rice, you will love this too!

We love the chicken! The meat is so juicy and tender. And the skin just melts in your mouth! *We were so guilty after that but it’s definitely worth it!*

What is Chicken rice without the “3 musketeers”? Chilli + Ginger + Dark sauce. The chilli served here is not very spicy yet a little sweet. So if you are not someone who can take spicy chilli, you will love the chilli here.

JAF was at Marina Bay Sands yesterday and had dinner at Rasapura Masters. Sounds like some kind of exquisite food yeah? It is actually a brand new food court (run by Koufu) and was officially opened on 1st December. No wonder we saw so many well wishes bouquets of flowers all around the place.

As for the meaning behind “Rasapura”, it means “City of Taste”. (Rasa = taste, pura = city)
For more information, you may want to check this link:
http://www.koufu.com.sg/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=29&Itemid=28

There are many stalls ranging from local favourites to regional delights (from Beijing, India, Phillipines, Thailand, Vietnam, Ipoh). More descriptions about the vaious stalls can be found here:

JAF and friend tried out 2 dishes from the Vietnamese stall: Beef Phở (Beef Noodle Soup) and Grilled Chicken Rice.

Description of the Vietnamese stall:
Phở Hòa Noodle Soup
The first Phở Hòa restaurant was setup in California, USA, serving traditional Vietnamese food.
Today, Phở Hòa has become the largest Vietnamese chain in the world with 75 outlets. The eatery specializes in traditional beef kway teow soup garnished with herbs and spices. The variety of meats in the noodles makes it a wholesome choice for guests.

There are currently 2 outlets in Singapore: one at Suntec and the other at Holland Village.

Grilled Chicken Rice – the chicken taste like satay chicken, except the meat is a little hard.

The sauce has a slight sour taste and goes quite well with the chicken meat.

So how much does it cost? Beef Phở and Grilled Chicken RIce each cost $7.50. Well, this is a “Masters” foodcourt with “master” prices.

Pig Trotters & Seafood Soup @ Woodlands

Pig trotters lovers (JAF is one of them!) get to add another place to their list. It’s at Woodlands Centre food market, beside Woodlands Checkpoint. Besides pig trotter, this stall is also famous for its seafood soup.

Be prepared for a long wait though…JAF was told that even if you do not see a long queue sometimes, but there are actually customers who are “tabao-ing” many packets. JAF waited for around 30 minutes before the first dish (pig trotter) came.

The conclusion: it’s worth the wait.

The braised pig trotter’s meat is incredibly tender and moist, thus easily torn.

The fatty and juicy skin pieces melt like ice cream and taste like heaven.

Verdict:
This pig trotter dish has fully satisfied all of JAF‘s criteria – (1) tender and moist meat, (2) fatty and juicy skin, (3) sweet and tasty gravy.
From $6 onwards, depending on the number of people sharing.

Now let’s take a look at the second dish…

The seafood soup looks colourful and delicious. Indeed, the distinctively tasty soup base is absolutely lip smacking.
Taste also the freshness of the generous ingredients (prawns, sotong, fish slices, tomatoes, mushrooms and big pieces of minced pork meat) in every mouthful.

The minced pork meat is the next best thing after the full flavoured stock. There are two big pieces, not dry, solidly compact yet tender.

Verdict:
The stall owner has successfully mixed all the ingredients very well to create a soup with multiple layers of flavours.

By the way, this is a real “attitude” stall. The bowl is always only half filled with soup no matter the serving size, and the stall does not entertain any request for more soup. So go for the big one if you think you are in a “soupy” mood.
Small – $5, Big – $6.50

Overall, an immensely satisfying meal! Yum yum…slurp!

Comforting Congee @ Li Fang Congee

Happened to pass by Albert Complex food market (diagonally opposite Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple) the other night, so JAF decided to settle the dinner here.
It was our first trip here ever since its reopening in December last year after 17 months of upgrading. The new food market certainly looks brighter and more spacious now. With so many stalls around, this place seems full of gastronomic delights.

JAF soon found a long queue at this particular congee stall, and noticed that there were bowls of congee on the surrounding tables.

Busy at work…

Offering a variety of congee flavours, the prices range from $2.80 (century egg & lean meat congee, chicken congee, pork congee) to $4.80 (mixed scallop congee) for the traditional ones. The most expensive is the frog congee ($6/$11).

JAF ordered one century egg & lean meat congee and one side dish.

Let’s start with the side dish. Bathed in gravy and finished with a topping of braised peanuts, this homemade beancurd dish ($2.50) sure looked appealing.

The first bite immediately sent JAF’s taste buds into a frenzy.
While the soft delicious centre of the beancurd totally melted in the mouth, the gravy…oh my gosh, tasted so saltish! Even JAF‘s friend who prefers saltish food found the gravy over-salted. Such a pity, as the dish had scored high on both the presentation and the beancurd texture.
Hmm…maybe the helpers accidentally added extra amount of salt on that day?

Smooth and silky soft on the inside of the beancurd.

Fortunately, this century egg & lean meat congee compensated for the previous “shock”. It was smooth, thick and nicely seasoned.

The century egg pieces were plentiful.
As for the Yau Zha Gwai or Eu Char Kway, it remained crisp throughout the meal.

There’s nothing simpler and more comforting than congee, so if you are looking for some to warm your stomach, the congee here is definitely one good choice.
Other dishes: raw fish, beancurd with spicy sauce.

Old School Delights

Good things are meant to be shared, right?

The Teo family members, who are deeply passionate about food, have been hosting Chinese New Year parties every year for nearly 200 people. Lots of homecooked food such as ngoh hiang, curry, mee siam and laksa etc are prepared, and among these dishes, mee siam (a 20 year old secret recipe passed down from a grandaunt) is the most sought after.

One day, someone suggested the idea of setting up a business. And so, Aaron, from the 3rd generation, decided to take up the challenge. Together with his sister, Olivia, they started Old School Delights (OSD) after almost 1 year of preparation.

The cafe concept was designed by Aaron the brother. JAF likes the pleasing and unpretentious setting with wooden tables and chairs, and a gigantic chalkboard menu behind the counter.

JAF is in love with this bright green mosaic feature wall.

A large blackboard stretching the entire length of one wall allows diners to scribble freely on it.

You will find yourself irresistibly drawn to the interesting collection of old school games and toys placed near the entrance of the café.

JAF felt so nostalgic when taking the photo of these “old fashioned” biscuits! Brought back memories of JAF munching away on those little biscuits during childhood times.

Order your meals using a white board and marker.

Here is Olivia at work. If the brother Aaron is the “brains” behind the cafe concept, then Olivia must be the “face” of the cafe. An ex-teacher and social worker, she is warm and friendly, and always ready to strike a conversation with the customers.

Fish Goli ($5.80) with tartar sauce. Goli = marbles (in hokkien). Get it? Creative!

The homemade tartar sauce tastes lovely. JAF thinks it’s the chopped onion bits that contribute much to the refreshing flavour. It certainly goes well with the fish goli.

Hainanese style Chicken cutlet
Craving for meat? You won’t regret the chicken cutlet.
The meat is nicely fried and oh so tender! It is easy to chew without requiring much effort.
JAF loves the fried rice that comes with it as well, because it is not greasy, dry or too salty.

This sweet sour cutlet sauce is worth mentioning. It is home-made from tomatoes, HP sauce, fresh onions, garlic…The overall taste is not too strong yet delectable enough and can be eaten on its own. JAF enjoys the sauce a lot.

And finally, we come to the signature OSD mee siam ($4.50) that is definitely different from the rest out there. At first glance…well, there’s bee hoon (rice vermicelli), tau pok (fried tofu puffs), beancurd strips, half a hard-boiled egg, and a tablespoon serving of belachan (spicy shrimp paste)… So what’s the big deal? The magic lies in the secret recipe rempah that forms the mee siam gravy base!

The rempah, a secret recipe from Olivia’s grandaunt, has to be freshly made and there are MANY ingredients involved. JAF learnt from Olivia that as a result, making the rempah is rather time consuming work, with both father and grandmother helping out at times. The end result is a richly flavoured local delight that intrigues the taste buds. Just sipping the gravy alone is a satisfying experience.

Other dishes in the menu include: lontong, home-style curry chicken, laksa, nasi lemak besar, home-style breaded fish and chips.

A coffee or tea with a light-textured Old Grandma’s butter cake would be the perfect way to end this gratifying meal.

The dinner cost $21.70 in total. No MSG, no service charge. Good price, friendly ambience, nice food. What’s not to like?

P/S: Olivia is the great great grand-daughter of Singapore Sling creator Ngiam Tong Boon! Wow…

“Hollywood” Braised Duck and Char Kway Teow

At first look, the hawker centre looks nothing like it’s name, “Hollywood Canteen”.
the simple furnishing that have seen better times was just decked with plastic grey chairs placed around white round tables. Canteen style – yes. Hollywood standard, not even a hint. This very old hawker centre is between Haig Road and Tanjong Katong Road. The only way to get there is to enter from Tanjong Katong Road.

*Tips: If you know where is Sheng Shiong Supermarket (Tanjong Katong branch), you will be able to find the place because they are at the same vicinity*

The awesome Liang Kee, which JAF believe personally, totally helms this whole entire hawker centre food to a different level.

The duck speaks for itself. Very tender…soft and even though it’s drenched in gravy, it still stands for itself. Other side dishes are all equally good! Check out next picture…

JAF always order extra dish of “Tau Pok” (Deep fried Tofu), “Loh Neng” (Hard boiled Egg), “Ark Gua” (Duck Liver). The texture of the “Tau Pok” is slightly crisp and since it’s soaked in the gravy, when you bite it, the gravy ozzes out. WoOoo…The gravy is simply awesome.

The congee served here would have made any granny proud. It’s thick, starchy, and there’s that hint of home cooked taste to it, just like how ah ma would have preferred. And to perfect that plain bowl of comfort food, thick “duck” gravy was poured on top of it. It’s the perfect pairing of congee and gravy…to top it off, a dash of white pepper.

*Fyi…Parsley, Chives and thinly sliced Ginger are added on top but we took them away because of the photo shot…

Another stall which JAF always patronise at the same hawker centre is this Char Kway Teow stall. The only complaint JAF has is that this uncle can get quite inconsistent in his cooking. The char kway teow is generally good but there are times it can get a bit too dry. But still…that doesn’t stop JAF from ordering…

More *hums* (Cockles) plsssss!!

Overall, it’s simple fare of fish cake, cockles, kway teow and sweet dark sauce thats fulfills one’s desire and they add one more item that makes it sinful. “Bak You Pok”(Pork Lard). The crispiness of the lard sums up the whole entire plate and yes, you gotta try it! High cholestrol or not, it’s worth skipping your gym session for it.

Asia Grand Dim Sum

“Addiction” is the word to use for this starter. It consists of diced fish cake, capsicums and cucumber. It’s so appetizing that you just can’t stop eating it!
*Do take note that they will charge for additional servings.

Vinegar Pork Trotter, a typical confinement dish for new mommies, is a favourite among customers.
The meat is simmered till it’s so tender and juicy. You can savor the sweetness of the gravy which has a slight taste of ginger as well. And of course the best part of all is the layer of fat in the trotters! WooOoo…

*Tips: There are “Special Dishes of the Day” available at Asia Grand everyday. Vinegar Pork Trotter is usually one of the dishes. Check it out before you order.

One word to describe this dish… MARVELLOUS! Crispy skin plus tender and moist flesh…oooh, this “Siu Yuk” (Roast Pork) is just soo..sooo..GOOD.
There was once when JAF went and the “Siu Yuk” were all sold out! One lesson learnt, and since then, JAF always make a “reservation” for this dish before going to the restaurant.

A chinese version of “Molten chocolate cake” ~ “Po Luo Liu Sha Bao”. JAF can get really excited whenever it comes to this dish! It is a MUST MUST order!
While the exterior is a “Po Luo Bao” (Pineapple Bun), the interior is actually a creamy mixture of egg custard and salted egg yolk. Love the warm creamy runny custard, and taste exceptionally good when it combines with the salted egg yolk and the sweet exterior crust.
When you place your order, insist that you want the Liu Sha Bao to be served HOT. From our past experience, we realised the flavour becomes affected once the buns cool down.
*Tips: When you call to make a reservation, remember to reserve the Po Luo Liu Sha Bao too!*

*Do you know?*
The name “pineapple bun” originated from the fact that its sugary top crust is cooked to a golden-brown color, and because its checkered top resembles the epicarp of a pineapple.

Can you see the creamy paste inside? Salted egg yolk custard combined with sweet crust…Yums!

Chee-Cheong Fun (Rice noodle roll) filled with char siew. The skin is so thin, almost translucent that you are able to see the fillings wrapped within! Sweet soy sauce is poured over the dish upon serving.

Dim sum lovers must try this Panfried Carrot Cake. Crispy on the outside and Soft in the inside. There are also bits of “lap cheong” (dried pork sausages) in it and JAF can’t stop but keep picking on the bits to eat! Hehe!

XO carrot cake is very different from the previous dish, panfried carrot cake. It is stir-fried with XO sauce (spicy seafood sauce), prawns, eggs and beansprouts.

*What exactly is XO sauce?*
http://chinesefood.about.com/od/sauces/a/XO-Sauce.htm

Char Siew Bao (BBQ Bun) ~ The char siew is so tender and sweet, oh so delicious!

Authentic Lotus leaf with Glutinous Rice. No picture of the filling inside the glutinous rice because JAF was too busy eating! Hehe!

What is Dim Sum without “Siew Mai” (Steamed Pork Dumpling)?

“Pidan” congee (Century Egg porridge) is pretty normal. JAF won’t say it’s a must to order but if you have craving for something light, you can try it.

Many customers love the Sharkfin in dumpling soup. This is a clear soup base with a big dumpling wrapped with sharkfin, minced pork and other ingredients. Just add a few droplets of vinegar, and the soup tastes super good!

Unlike some other restaurants, the steamed yam cake here is quite special because it comes in a small bowl. Just right to share if you have already ordered a few dishes. You can pour the sauce (given separately) over it, however the sauce can be a little too sweet so if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you can just eat it on its own.

One of the popular dishes at Asia Grand would be their Peking Duck. It comes with crackers which most kids love. Definitely a MUST order dish for JAF!
Just for your info, the Peking Duck seems to be having a promotion at only $30. So remember to ask the server if the promotion is still on.

Traditional Peking Duck sliced and neatly wrapped in crepes.

Whip up a bowl of “Mee-Pok” using the “left-over” Peking duck meat, together with some lightly fried mushrooms and vegetables.

Dessert to end your meal ~ Mango Sago Cream with Pomelo. It looks really creamy and you might think you’re gonna overdose on the “creaminess” but no, it tastes just fine. In fact, the lingering aftertaste leaves you craving for more!

15 minutes

This is Lasalle College Of The Arts. Yes, aren’t you impressed by the building structure? JAF and friends certainly are and think that it must be a shiok feeling to be studying in such a fascinating school environment.

15 Minutes is situated in Lasalle College Of The Arts. The cafe is divided into 2 areas of different levels. The style of the upper level is similar to that of an old school canteen, while the lower level presents a modern look. Guess it’s the furniture that helps to create a more relaxed and casual feel to the lower level. You also have a wide variety of food to choose from: salad, sandwiches, pizzas, pasta and the list goes on and on…

Most importantly, the prices are very affordable! But do take note there are different prices for lunch and dinner, lunchtime prices are cheaper and no service charges.

Long tables and benches at the upper level…Remember those old school days?

This is the lower level ~ Let’s chill out…

There is also a stage where live performances are held on certain evenings (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays)! Cool right? And if you are lucky enough, you might be able to catch special guest DJs too!
First set starts 7:30pm on Wed.
First set starts 8:30pm on Fri and Sat.

By the way, this place functions like a school canteen during lunchtime, so it’s self service and you have to place your orders at the counter.

After you have placed an order, you will be given this “UFO” disc. When this “UFO” device lights up and vibrates, it means your food is ready for collection!

Southern Fried Chicken Wings ~ JAF love the chicken wings! A definitely MUST order! Very crispy and not so oily.

Wasabi Prawn Pizza ~ For those who don’t like wasabi, do not worry because the Wasabi Prawn Pizza does not have a strong wasabi taste. The pizza is made of thin crust, so you will want to order for more food because that’s just not enough!
They have many other choices of pizzas to choose from, each at $7.90 (lunchtime). Pepperoni Pizza, Thai Basil Chicken Pizza, Mixed Mushroom Pizza (V), Asian Duck Pizza and Margherita Pizza (V) etc.
*(V) = Vegetarian*

One of the popular items in the menu is Mushroom Ham in Pink Sauce Linguini.
(JAF changed the pasta to penne instead. If you have any preference for your choice of pasta, feel free to change at the counter.)
The sauce is cooked just right. Not very thick yet very easy to eat. The pasta is cooked just right as well, and easy to chew.

Another MUST order side dish ~ Sotong Balls *$3.00*. Super Q…Super addictive! Trust JAF, you definitely would not stop at one!

The batter of the Fish and Chips is simply well done and the fish remains crisp for very long, no wonder it’s another popular item.

Bark Café

Everybody likes Bark’s Red Plum soda. Red plum made into thick sauce and mixed with sparkling soda. Very refreshing and thirst quenching!

This is one of the popular appetizers here – Bark’s chicken wings. They are deep fried till golden brown in colour. The wings are not very oily but yet very crispy. Must eat them while they are still hot…

Bark Café

Fish and Chips is one recommended main course at Bark Café. The portion is actually quite generous, so JAF would suggest that 2 people share 1 portion (if you want to try other dishes as well).
The fish and chips batter is perfect! Squeeze the lemon over the fish and chips, dip it in the tartar sauce and a little ketchup and bite it…WoOoo..*Yummilious!*

*Note: for those who prefer local flavours, Bark Cafe also served Crayfish Hor Fun, Sambal Nasi Goreng, Yang Chow Fried Rice…and other dishes too*

A very cosy ambience where you can chill out with your friends for a game of pool after a stressful day at work, or catch live soccer matches on the television during the weekends.

They have a big car park but most importantly, it’s FREE PARKING at Bark Cafe!
